EH 102-119  Course Policy Statement

Spring 2021

Course Description

Our society seems to be always engaged in culture wars of sorts and this year is no different. Like an old married couple, America is now more than ever resilient and resistant for better—protesting systematic racism—and for worse—refusing to comply with gubernational mask mandates. Every region of the country has addressed these (literal) life and death issues in unique ways, and our hot and humid geographical pocket is no different.

No matter where you’re from, the South is—and will be—your home while you attend the University of South Alabama. This semester, we’ll employ critical writing and reading skills to investigate how our shared regional identification as Southerners informs our push for a more progressive, inclusive future by speaking up and clapping back at the negativity surrounding us. Our course will use the writing process—brainstorming, drafting, revising, editing—to prepare and empower you to contribute thoughtfully to a diverse range of popular and academic conversations.

Course Objectives

Guess what! This class will not be the only place where critical thinking occurs during your four years at South Alabama. Thus, the primary goal of EH 102 is to prepare you to write, read, and reason in other courses at USA. Consequently, it will further your understanding of some elements of writing covered in EH 101, such as helping you:

  • Plan, draft, and revise writing based on your analysis of the rhetorical situation, your knowledge of the subject matter, and feedback from your peers and me.
  • Understand a variety of academic genres by examining the basic characteristics that define each type.
  • Evaluate your writing and others’ by drawing on criteria that apply to most writing
  • Reflect on and evaluate your development as a writer.
  • Explore a range of ideas through writing, readings, and discussion in order for you to grow intellectually.
