FAQs
Here are some answers to some Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs).
1. How do I set up extra time for students? Links to an external site.
Guide for Extra Time/Accommodations in Quizzes Links to an external site.
2. Will Canvas send a notification to students when a quiz is available? Will Canvas send reminders to students when quizzes are due?
Canvas sends notifications based on student preferences and will not remind students that quizzes are available or due. If students have enabled notifications for new or changed course content, they will receive a notification that a quiz, assignment or content page has been published, but not when quizzes or assignments are made available or when they are due. Best practice is to ask students not to change their notifications.
Students will see the quiz to be taken in their to-do list and their course calendar. Best practice is to send an announcement with quiz details to students.
3. Can I duplicate a quiz, such as to create a pre and post assessment?
You cannot duplicate the quiz, so you must either import from another course or reimport the qti file.
4. Can I upload a PDF/doc file or a quiz from Google Forms or Googlde Docs to quizzes?
Canvas only accepts QTI files, so if you have the quiz in another format, you will have to add the quiz manually.
5. Will students know if quizzes are graded or ungraded?
Yes, when the students access the quiz, they will be notified whether the quiz is graded or ungraded.
6. If I put a password on a quiz and a student is taking the quiz and gets kicked off, but I've already changed the password for the next section, will the student lose their work?
No, the student would enter the new password to access the quiz and continue taking the quiz. Canvas auto-saves every thirty seconds, so their work would be saved.
7. If I create a fill-in-the-blank question and a student misspells the answer, will Canvas catch it or will it be marked wrong? Are answers in Canvas quizzes case-sensitive?
Canvas will mark misspelled answers incorrect. For concerns about spelling, the best practice is to check the fill-in-the-blank answers manually and override.
No, answers to quizzes are not case-sensitive.
8. What quiz setting should I use if I want to have students show their work for a question?
You can choose for students to upload a file to show their work.
9. What is the difference between the save and update buttons when creating quizzes?
The update button is for saving your work on a question and so it updates the quiz you're working on, but still allows you to stay on the page to keep working.
The save button is for saving the whole quiz as is and will take you back to the main page. It's important to note that if you are working on a question and hit save instead of update, the question will not be saved. Instead, you should hit update to update the question you worked on and then hit save to save the whole quiz, including the question you just added to the quiz.
10. How can I view the quiz as the students see it?
Go to student view, located on the right side of the home page in Canvas, and then and open the quiz to view it as students will see it. Preview does not show what students will see, but is for you to see the flow of the quiz as you build it.
11. Can I upload an audio or video file to ask students questions? Could answers be audio or video files? Could students answer questions with audio or video files?
Yes, you can upload an audio or video file for students to view. (INSERT guide). Yes, students could submit an audio or video file to a question you designate the question as a file upload.
